Setting up FL Studio for Miles on Windows with loopMIDI

On Windows, Miles talks to FL Studio through its NolvraMILES script and two virtual MIDI ports made with loopMIDI. Download the script, put it in FL Studio's Hardware folder, make the two ports, set FL Studio's MIDI settings and read Miles's status line.

One script and two ports

On Windows, Miles talks to FL Studio through its NolvraMILES script inside FL Studio and two virtual MIDI ports made with loopMIDI, a small virtual MIDI cable by Tobias Erichsen. Five steps: download the script, put it in FL Studio's Hardware folder, make the two ports, set FL Studio's MIDI settings, and read Miles's status line. Then Miles writes into FL Studio on Windows as it does on a Mac: drums into new patterns, bass and chords as MIDI files.

Step 1: download the script

One file

The script is one file, device_NolvraMILES.py. On Windows the Miles installer does not put it in FL Studio, so you download it here. It is the same file the Mac app installs.

device_NolvraMILES.py

Miles's FL Studio script, version fl-1.2, for Miles for Windows 0.9.2. To check the file, run Get-FileHash device_NolvraMILES.py in PowerShell and compare the result with the SHA-256 above.

Step 2: put it in FL Studio's Hardware folder

Close FL Studio

FL Studio reads its scripts only when it starts, so do this with FL Studio closed.

Make the folder

In File Explorer go to Documents\Image-Line\FL Studio\Settings\Hardware and make a folder named NolvraMILES.

Copy the file

Copy device_NolvraMILES.py into that folder and keep its name. The full path is C:\Users\your name\Documents\Image-Line\FL Studio\Settings\Hardware\NolvraMILES\device_NolvraMILES.py.

Step 3: install loopMIDI and make the two ports

Install loopMIDI

Download loopMIDI from tobias-erichsen.de and install it. Miles checks for it by itself: while FL Studio is open and loopMIDI or one of the ports is missing, Miles says To connect FL Studio, install loopMIDI (tobias-erichsen.de) and add two ports: "Miles Out" and "Miles In".

Add Miles Out

Open loopMIDI. In the new port name field type Miles Out and add the port.

Add Miles In

Type Miles In and add the second port. Both now appear in loopMIDI's list. Miles finds the ports by their names, so spell them exactly that way. Leave loopMIDI running; Miles looks for the ports every 3 seconds, so it connects even if you add them while Miles is open.

Step 4: set FL Studio's MIDI settings

Open the settings

Open FL Studio, then Options > MIDI settings.

Choose the input

In the Input list select Miles Out and set its Controller type to NolvraMILES. Note the port number it has.

Choose the output

In the Output list give Miles In the same port number. FL Studio may also show Miles Out on that number in the Output list; it does that by itself and it does no harm.

Step 5: read Miles's status line

  • FL Studio connected: the script and the ports are working and Miles is following your project.
  • FL Studio is open but not sending: FL Studio runs but nothing arrives. Check that loopMIDI is running with both ports, that the script is in the NolvraMILES folder, then the MIDI settings above.
  • If you quit loopMIDI or delete a port while Miles is open, Miles notices within 3 seconds and shows the loopMIDI line again.
